Objective: To compare the differences of listening effort between elderly adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and normal control (NC), and to explore the correlation between listening effort, depression and anxiety in them. Methods: A total of 35 patients with MCI and 46 NC were enrolled. The speech, spatial and qualities of hearing scale (SSQ) was used to evaluate the dimensions of listening effort. The cognitive function, anxiety and depression were also evaluated. Results: The speech and spatial scores of SSQ in MCI group were significantly lower than those in NC group. The speech dimensions of the two groups were significantly negatively correlated with the degree of depression, and the spatial dimension of the MCI group was significantly negatively correlated with the degree of anxiety (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: The overall listening effort of elderly patients with MCI is weaker than that of NC, and the listening effort is related to the degree of depression and anxiety. Improving the listening effort may help improve the cognitive function and emotional state of elderly patients with MCI.
